Unique School Features

Our goal is to establish a unique medical school here in Indiana with both domestic and international students committed to the health of all. The school will have the following features which will uniquely prepare students to serve in global health arenas:

Traditional Medicine and Public Health

Typical medical school curriculums teach how to care for the individual patient. However, it is well known that behavioral, environmental, and social factors have profound effects on an individual’s health and looking at these “upstream” determinants of health is the domain of public health as well as looking at the health of populations. Our medical school will combine the pedagogies of traditional medical education and public health. Our innovative curriculum is anticipated to allow antiquate time to allow research or obtaining a Masters of Public-Health degree

Graduate Without Debt

To allow our graduates to practice in low-resource settings we will work to develop an endowment allowing them to graduate with little or no debt in return for a commitment to care for the underserved. Per 2013 statistics from the American Association of Medical School 86% of U.S. medical school graduates have an average educational debt of $169,000. The average yearly tuition cost for public schools is $32,997 and private ones $52,456. Paying the debt back with interest can more than double the burden.

Education, Clinical Care, and Research

Like all schools of medicine we will have a tripartite mission of education, clinical care, and research. The latter will be focused on the interests our board including innovative medical devices and care processes for low-resource settings, total joint replacements in these settings, epidemiology of infectious disease, and neglected tropical diseases, for example.

Faculty Promotion for Global Health

To promote undergraduate public/global health education we hope to loan faculty to nearby liberal arts schools to teach classes such as epidemiology to help them establish global health concentrations. At the opposite end of the educational process we will work with global health fellowships like the one in Kenya one of our board members has established

Economic Stimulus for Indiana

We hope for a “halo effect” where our institution can act as an economic stimulus for the community we are in, wherever it might be in Indiana. BioCrossroads in February 2016 reported that life sciences contributed to a $62 billion economic impact for the State of Indiana and that Indiana has maintained its status as the second largest exporter of life science products in the U.S. Over 56,000 people work at nearly 1,700 companies in the State. These include Eli Lilly, Roche, Cook, Zimmer, DePuy, and Biomet.
